On Friday, June 21 Manifattura Tabacchi di Firenze introduces the prototype of future Manufacturing. Project B9 (as in Building 9) is an indoor and outdoor space connected with the city and the world, a sustainable and creative place open to everyone; an incubator of innovation for the city and a new international excellence, where the ordinary and the extraordinary coexist; a modern centre, a cultural and artistic hub for Florence.
B9 integrates the site-specific installation conceived by neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso and curated by PNAT – the first “Air Factory”, a test device that reduces indoor pollution by leveraging on the plants’ ability to absorb and break down air pollutants.
With its patented RWB technology featured in the appliances Gople and Una Pro, Artemide is an integral part of this innovative project aimed at reducing indoor pollution. In fact it nourishes plants by providing them the most appropriate light for their different stages of growth, supporting their development indoors, where natural light is not bright enough.
The “Air Factory” is a first and one-of-its-kind solution, conceived and implemented by neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso and PNAT, an academic spin-off of the Florence State University, to reduce indoor pollution, and uses and improves the plants’ ability to absorb and break down air pollutants. Air is collected and directed through pipes towards especially designed modules to force its passage through soil and plants, thus reducing air pollutants by 97% after passing through the botanic filter. At Manifattura Tabacchi, the “Air Factory” purifies 5000 c.m. per hour. It is a unique, scalable and repeatable combination of design and botany, which enhances exponentially the plants’ ability to remove pollutants from residential, trade, and work spaces.
